What harm do low-quality freezers do to supermarkets?

2025 09/18

The quality of supermarket freezers is crucial to the success of supermarkets. A good freezer effectively preserves food, while a low-quality one not only fails to preserve food effectively but also consumes more energy. So, what harm do low-quality freezers do to supermarkets?

Cheap, low-quality freezers fail to meet national minimum temperature standards, forcing frozen and refrigerated foods to fluctuate within substandard temperatures. Food no longer maintains its freshness within its shelf life, and its texture and taste deteriorate dramatically.

Food safety: Supermarket freezers used for refrigeration and display are kept at a minimum of -18°C. However, the interior of low-quality supermarket freezers, near the frame, fails to meet national standards and consistently hovers at -9°C. This is the key factor leading to food safety and hygiene issues. It's no secret that one of the main reasons consumers shop at supermarkets is the availability of fresh food. "Freshness" is a constant consumer pursuit. If the promise of "freshness" isn't delivered, consumer satisfaction naturally declines, and the supermarket's reputation will sooner or later be negatively impacted.

Energy Consumption: Substandard refrigerators clearly cannot compete with genuine products in terms of energy consumption. Given the same net volume, substandard refrigerators consume at least 25% more electricity than genuine products. This high energy consumption alone increases the total cost of ownership for supermarkets purchasing and using substandard supermarket refrigerators—the sum of purchase, energy, and maintenance costs, spread over the product's lifecycle. The actual cost of substandard refrigerators is significantly higher than genuine products.

Defrost Cycle: Freezers typically generate a fine mist during the automatic defrost process. Genuine refrigerators can be configured to automatically defrost only during non-business hours. Substandard refrigerators, however, cannot be set to this precise defrost cycle and instead defrost approximately every 50 hours, meaning they also defrost during normal business hours, when consumers are shopping. This situation can lead to an unpleasant shopping experience for consumers, as they cannot clearly see the merchandise displayed within the refrigerators.
